On the Clock
The third busiest airstrip in the State of South Dakota was deteriorating and needed to be replaced. With the air traffic disruptions this type of project would create, the clients were concerned about the project schedule. Clark and project partner M.C. Schaff & Associates needed to complete this project in the least amount of time possible, with minimal disruption to the airport users.
The Right Plan
To provide a more long-term solution to runway maintenance, concrete was used to replace the run-down asphalt airstrip. Clark provided survey and construction administration services, and assisted with overseeing of project bidding and construction observation. The client and design team determined the quickest way to get the project complete was to actually shut the airport down. This allowed the construction to happen quickly and disrupt overall service much less than trying to perform construction while the airport was open.
Clear for Takeoff
With only minimal wet-weather delays, the project was completed efficiently in only 80 days. The project was also under budget, due to excellent design work by the design team, and well-executed construction by the contractor. This allowed for additional improvements to be made to the airport, including security gate improvements and tarmac repairs. The new runway and additional improvements have revitalized this important South Dakota airport for long-term future use and growth. |
